Has Big Government Infected the States?
We've complained about 'big government' infecting America at the federal level, but it looks as if an increasing amount of waste is starting to spread at the state level.
Two indicators seem to support the possibility that state government is growing at or faster than federal levels. The first indicator is spending, and the second is employment.
On spending, it appears as if the states took it upon themselves to spend irresponsibly while federal spending was idle. The chart below represents quarterly spending levels in billions.
In terms of employment, the picture is more perverse. The states are pressured to cut back on employment more than the federal government.
